What do you write?
Words mostly. Often in the form of junior or mid-grade novels and picture books, but also young adult stories and sometimes even blog posts and shopping lists. I love writing fantasies and grand adventures. I also adore humour – much silliness happens at my keyboard.
Where do your ideas come from?
I’m a long time collector of ideas. They can be found in books, on TV, tumbling down streets, lurking in conversations, stowing away on boats and what-not. Ideas hide almost everywhere – you need special glasses to see them.
Have you had anything published?
My first picture book will be published by Viking (an imprint of Penguin, US) hopefully some time in 2010. I’ve had a number of stories in The School Magazine and educational resources. In 2008 I was awarded an Australian Society of Authors mentorship to develop a junior novel of mine with Kate Forsyth. I also came runner-up in the 2008 Ipswich Festival of Children’s Literature junior novel competition and won the 2009 CYA Writing and Illustrating Conference competition for picture book illustrations. My website lists everything else I’ve been up to in the last few millennia.
What other jobs have you worked?
Essential oils salesperson
Christmas gift wrapper
Medical courier: I carried stuff around a hospital – letters, medicine, body parts (Seriously – once I carried a leg in a jar)
Waitress / kitchen hand
Bounty hunter
Children’s counsellor
I’m also a bad liar. Can you tell?
Do you have any pets?
One crazy, hairy, mischievous, knee-licking and yet still adorable puppy. I also desperately want a rabbit, but we’re not allowed them in QLD. I’m considering applying for a magician’s licence to get around it. Shazam.
Love…
Peanut butter
Hayao Miyazaki
Smell of burnt sugarcane
Books
Loathe…
Bananas
Supermarkets
Exclamation marks (they’re evil)
Ninja or pirate?
Pirate. But not the ‘scurvy rotten-teeth’ kind. The ‘Johnny Depp dirty-dreadies awesome-outfit’ kind.
Name three thoughts right at this moment
These questions are kinda silly.
I wonder who wrote them?
Hey, that cloud looks like a rabbit drinking tea…
What are you wearing?
Now that’s a little personal.
