The Big Apple

As some may remember, last year I received a travel grant to attend the New York Winter SCBWI conference, as well as meet my publisher and US agent. Over a week ago, after boarding a plane, travelling backwards through time and flying over oceans and ice, Squish Rabbit and I landed in the frosty Big Apple.

Unprepared for the freezing conditions (I’m no snow bunny), the first thing I did was head out shopping. Ok, so it wasn’t just because I was unprepared … there were some incredible winter sales with awesome hats and boots and coats luring me into stores. Needless to say it was a successful shopping trip.

The SCBWI conference was incredible, with many inspiring talks and presentations on everything from digital publishing and picture books, to crossover novels and writing humour (Mo Willems!). Lots to take away, and I’ve left with a growing urge to dive back into my stories.

While over here I’ve been lucky enough to have the company of a number of lovely Aussie authors and illustrators. I spent the most time with Serena Geddes, Tina Burke and James Foley – all incredibly talented and whose books you should check out. After the conference we got up to all sorts of shenanigans, including: iceskating, pizza and gelato in times square, snow fights, Irish pubbery, late night hot chocolates (and maybe some cocktails), Chinese New Year (year of the rabbit!) and plenty of random meandering.

I’ve been keeping a visual diary while here, filled with ticket stubs and a muddle of found objects with scratchings and scribbles over the top. I’ll put some up over the next few days, but for now I’m going to go take another big bite out of that apple…

Falling off the Wagon

So it seems I’ve fallen off the blogging wagon. Considering it’s been over a month since I’ve posted, I suppose you could even say I was catapulted from the rickety wagon. In fact it feels a little like I crashed the darn thing. Life has been a bit hectic of late, both within my work and personal life. But I wont patronise you with excuses – instead I’ll offer up a (hopefully) placating summary of my last month:

  • Worked on final edits of Squish Rabbit, who is about to hop off to the printers
  • Embarked on an interstate move from cold and rainy Adelaide to cold and rainy Brisbane (why do I always take the weather with me?)
  • Volunteered at Brisbane’s CYA conference – for a more eloquent summary of the day than I could write, go visit Kathleen Noud
  • QWC featured Squish on the cover of their Writing Queensland magazine – you can download a desktop version of the image here
  • Attended Australia/NZs international SCBWI conference in Sydney (and got a little merry with all the lovely children’s writers/illustrators and publishers) – visit Chris Cheng’s blog for a great summary
  • Featured as guest blogger on Katrina Germain’s blog for a father’s day special in celebration of her delightful new picture book ‘My Dad Thinks He’s Funny
  • Missed out on weeks worth of sleep and then struggled in vain to catch up

There’s my attempt to resurrect the wagon of my blog. So am I forgiven?

SCBWI

If you haven’t heard of SCBWI before, it’s the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. It’s a wonderful worldwide organisation, all about supporting the growth and development of its members.

When living in Brisbane my Queensland SCBWI group was one of my greatest supports, and leaving them was incredibly tough. Now in Adelaide we have just started up our own South Australian chapter, with the help of Chris Cheng, co-director of SCBWI Australia. I’ll be leading the group, helped by all the wonderful members here as we get to know each other.

That’s Chris and I above – Chris generously did a quick fly by visit for our last meeting to let us know all about SCWBI and how we can operate as a newly formed group. A few of us will also be attending the Sydney SCWBI conference later in the year. It should be a wonderful couple of days (I hope to see many of you there!). Also, due to the scholarship I received earlier in the year, I’ll get to attend the SCWBI winter conference in New York in January.

It’s turning into a very SCWBI kind of year for me…
