Not-Duck

For the last week or so I have been working on the final illustrations for a new picture book of mine. You may remember back when I was developing the characters for it, and even when I was storyboarding it out. It’s been a lot of fun, and I’m now mourning the fact that it’s all done and I no longer get to frolic with the characters. That said, there’s nothing quite like the feeling when it all finally comes together. I love seeing an idea materialise on paper after it’s lived in my head for so long.

Like many of my stories, I often can’t see where they’ve come from until long after they’re written. I’m a little embarrassed to say that I believe this is actually the story of my fiance and I. Can you guess which character I am? (hint: it’s probably the opposite of your initial instinct…)

Gorgeous, Katherine. A mix of the ‘Miffy’ style of illustration with your own blend of humour and the floppy bunny/duck/character look. Very sweet and beautifully executed. You have a wonderful sense of design, colour, and space. Well done! Joanna :))

Sweet and funny – how could you have resisted Andrew for so long?

Oh Chris, he brought a fair amount of chaos into my very structured life, but a lot of colour too! Although really, there was very little resisting :)

Thanks Joanne. It took me a while to settle on the style for the story, but am really happy with it now.

Beautiful Katherine – just beautiful. Can’t wait to see it in gloss format in a book in my grubby hands.

And if you are the duck..then you put Andrew in the dress? It must be love since he hasn’t jumped in and denied it at all ….you guys are so sweet – no wonder you are getting married!

    Bye 4 now

Thanks, lovely girl! When I realised it was our story and told Andrew, we were in hysterics at the thought that my subconscious had designated us the most undignified characters possible – me a stubborn duck and Andrew a very girly toddler :) I agree – it must truly be love if he’s still talking to me after that!
